As our pets age, their needs change — and that includes what’s required for their comfort and care when you’re away. Whether you’re heading on holiday, taking a work trip, or simply need a short break, finding the right place for your senior pet can be a challenge. At Vetmed, we understand that older pets deserve a little extra attention, and our dedicated senior and hospital boarding services are designed with their well-being in mind.
A Calmer Environment for Older Dogs and Cats
Senior pets thrive in calm, familiar, and stress-free environments. At Vetmed, our boarding facilities are quiet, air-conditioned, and purpose-built to provide a peaceful stay.
For dogs, the senior and hospital boarding area has fewer kennels and animals to minimise stress. Each dog enjoys their own indoor, climate-controlled space with fresh bedding provided daily. For pets from the same family, partitions between kennels can be opened, allowing companions to stay together for added comfort.
For cats, boarding takes place in our split-level cat condos, where they can rest, stretch, and observe in comfort. We use Feliway®, a calming pheromone that helps soothe anxiety and promote relaxation. Cats from the same household can also share a larger space by opening the partition between their condos.
Compassionate Care with Veterinary Oversight
What truly sets Vetmed apart is that our boarding services operate within a veterinary clinic environment. That means your pet is never far from qualified veterinary care if it’s needed.
Older pets often have special requirements — from chronic conditions and medication schedules to mobility or incontinence issues. Our experienced nursing team monitors each pet closely and can administer medications as prescribed.
We regularly care for:
- Elderly dogs and cats needing a quiet, supportive space.
- Pets recovering from minor surgery.
- Pets with chronic illnesses or on long-term medication.
- Pets with incontinence or mobility challenges.
You can relax knowing your senior pet is cared for by compassionate professionals who understand the nuances of geriatric care.
Safety and Health First
Because your pet’s health is our top priority, Vetmed has a few important requirements for all senior boarders:
- Recent vet check: Senior pets (aged 10 years or older) must have had a consultation with one of our vets within the last six months before boarding. This ensures we fully understand their current health status and can provide the best possible care.
- Current vaccinations: All boarders must be up to date with vaccinations and flea treatments to protect the health of every pet in our care.
- Medication management: Pets on medication must have their prescriptions verified and up to date. If your pet usually attends another vet, we’ll request a copy of their medical history to ensure continuity of care.
- Fit to Board consultation: For new clients, a one-off “Fit to Board” consultation ($80) is required before their first stay.
Please note that Vetmed is not a 24-hour facility, so pets are not attended overnight — but rest assured, our team ensures every guest is settled safely for the night.
Designed for Comfort and Routine
We know that consistency helps senior pets feel secure. That’s why we keep feeding times and routines familiar. Meals are provided morning and evening, using premium Royal Canin Sensitivity Control food. If your pet has a sensitive stomach or a preferred diet, you’re welcome to bring your own food at no extra cost.
For dogs, short toilet walks are provided daily, while cats enjoy twice-daily cleaning and fresh litter in their condos. Bedding is changed daily, and the entire facility is regularly disinfected to maintain the highest hygiene standards.
When Short-Term Boarding Is Best
Vetmed’s boarding service is ideal for short-term stays — typically up to five days — where your pet needs a safe, comfortable environment under veterinary supervision. If you’re planning a longer trip, we can help recommend extended-stay facilities that align with your pet’s needs.
Because They Deserve the Best
Our senior pets have given us years of love and companionship — they deserve the same level of care in return. Whether your pet needs gentle supervision while you’re away or daily medication in a calm environment, Vetmed’s senior and hospital boarding services provide the comfort, safety, and veterinary expertise they deserve.
So, the next time you’re planning a getaway, you can relax knowing your furry friend will be cared for just like family — because at Vetmed, that’s exactly how we see them.
