Summer Pet Safety: How to Keep Your Pet Healthy in the Heat

Australia’s summer brings longer days, warmer nights and more time outdoors with our pets. But along with fun in the sun, hot weather brings particular risks; especially for dogs and cats who can’t regulate their body temperature as easily as we can. At Vetmed, we want your pet to enjoy the warmth safely, so we’ve pulled together our top tips on how to keep them cool, comfortable and out of harm’s way this summer.

Read on to learn why hot weather matters for pets, how to recognise danger signs, practical steps for staying safe and what to do if something goes wrong, so you’re prepared, and your furry friend stays well all summer long.

Why Heat Affects Pets More Than We Think

Most pets don’t sweat like we do, they rely mostly on panting or other less efficient cooling methods. This means temperatures that feel manageable to us can become dangerous for them. According to the Australian Animal Safety Group1, heat-related issues in pets (such as heatstroke or paw burns) are a genuine threat during summer, especially for brachycephalic breeds (flat-faced dogs), senior animals, pets with thick coats or those who are overweight.

Cars, pavement, direct sun and humid nights can all raise a pet’s body temperature quickly, which is why simple routines and environment adjustments matter so much.

Recognising the Warning Signs

Knowing when your pet is uncomfortable is one of the most important parts of summer care. Early signs may be subtle: heavier panting than usual, hesitating to go outside, seeking cool tiles or shade, or simply being a little quieter. But more serious warning signs include bright red or purple gums, collapse, seizures, vomiting, or shallow breathing – these can indicate heatstroke and require immediate action.

Also consider surface-heat risks: pavement, sand or asphalt can become scalding under the summer sun and burn paw pads in seconds. A simple test: put your hand on the surface, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.

Practical Steps for Keeping Your Pet Safe

Hydration & Cool Zones
Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, cool water. Place bowls in shaded, ventilated areas and even consider ice cubes or cool water bottles for added relief. Indoors, keep a fan or air-conditioning flow in pet resting areas. Outside, give them access to shady, well-ventilated spaces.

Adjust Activity & Surface Exposure
Avoid high-intensity play or long walks during the heat of the day (typically from late morning until afternoon). Instead, aim for early mornings or later evenings when it’s cooler. When walking outdoors, especially on paved or sandy ground, test the surface temperature before letting them step on it.

Protect their Environment
If your pet spends time outdoors, ensure they are not stuck in sun traps, enclosed yards with poor airflow or hot vehicles. Never leave them unattended in a car as interiors can become fatal in minutes.

Grooming & Coat Management
Proper grooming helps pets evacuate heat better. For long-haired or double-coated breeds, light grooming helps air flow under the coat. But avoid shaving too short as insufficient fur can expose the skin to UV and sunburn. For light-coloured or short-coated pets, you could consider pet-safe sunscreen for exposed areas like ears or nose.

Travel & Holiday Plans
If you’re travelling or out for extended periods, pack a pet travel-kit: water, portable bowl, towel, familiar toy/blanket and vet contact info. Monitor your pet’s behaviour, especially in new environments or heat-intensive locations (beaches, outdoor social gatherings, etc.).

When Something Looks Wrong: Be Ready for Emergencies

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke or overheating, act quickly. Move them into a cool area, wet their body with lukewarm (not icy cold) water, offer small sips of cool water if they are conscious, and seek veterinary help immediately – internal damage may already be occurring.

Have your vet’s contact, the after-hours emergency clinic number and your pet’s medical history ready. It’s better to call early than wait. A small delay can make a big difference.
