General Health Checks

Humans aren’t the only ones who benefit from regular health examinations. We recommend a comprehensive annual check-up for your pet to help monitor their overall health and detect any issues early.
Once your pet reaches their senior years (from 10 years of age), we advise health checks every six months. More frequent examinations may also be recommended if your pet has existing medical conditions or ongoing health concerns.
Some of the things we will address during a preventative and health care consultation are:

  • Exercise, such as how much exercise your dog or cat receives, how often, what kind, any changes, etc.
  • Stomach and intestines
  • Ears and eyes—any discharge, itching, redness
  • Breathing—coughing, shortness of breath, sneezing
  • Behavioural problems like ‘accidents’, changes in temperament, barking
  • Feet and legs—toenail problems, weakness, limping
  • Coat and skin—any mats, shedding, hair loss, pigment changes, lumps, itchy spots, anal sac problems
  • Urogenital—note discharges, heats, changes in mammary glands, urination changes or difficulties
  • Neutering, if it hasn’t already been performed

Pet Vaccinations

Your pets should be vaccinated annually to protect them from many highly contagious and infectious diseases. The best form of protection is having your pet fully vaccinated.

It’s particularly important to make sure new puppies and kittens are fully vaccinated, as they’re immune systems are still developing.

Vaccinations that are required:

  • 6 to 8 weeks of age
  • 12 weeks of age
  • 16 weeks of age
  • Then annually for the rest of their life.

Nutrition

Vetmed preventative care consultations include advice on nutrition – what your dog or cat eats, how often, supplements, treats, changes in appetite or water consumption. When pets are fed appropriately for their age, size, and lifestyle, they are better equipped to resist disease and recover more easily from illness or injury.

Preventative flea, tick and worming

Prevention is your best defence when it comes to parasites.

  • Intestinal Worming: Puppies and kittens should be dewormed every two weeks until 12 weeks old, then monthly until 6 months, and every 3 months for life.
  • Flea & Tick Control: Use vet recommended treatments such as Bravecto (now available for dogs as an injectable parasiticide that provides up to a full year of flea and tick protection with just one dose), NexGard, or Revolution. Fleas can quickly infest your home, and ticks can cause paralysis, so prevention is key.
  • Heartworm Prevention (Dogs Only): Starts at 12 weeks with monthly tablets, spot-on treatments, or an annual injection.

Comprehensive Blood Tests

While vaccinations, parasite control, and routine health checks are well-known parts of preventative care, comprehensive blood tests are an equally important, giving our expert vets a window into your pet’s internal health.

As part of your dog or cat’s preventive care plan with Vetmed, we recommend comprehensive blood testing at following key life stages:

  • At 2, 5, 7, and 9 years of age
  • Yearly blood tests from 10 years onwards

These tests help detect age-related or chronic conditions early, giving your pet the best chance for timely intervention and a longer, healthier life.
