VetMed is one of the only Sydney vet clinics to provide advanced veterinary surgery options including laparoscopic keyhole surgery.

Keyhole surgery has been routinely used in human surgeries for the last couple of decades. It provides patients with minimally invasive surgery, lower scarring, and faster, less painful recovery. This advanced surgery procedure is now able to be performed for your pet at our veterinary hospital.

Using Keyhole Surgery for Biopsies and De-Sexing

Our qualified VetMed teams use laparoscopic surgery to perform safe, effective ‘keyhole spays’ in female animals, as well as male pets with undescended testicles.

Laparoscopic surgery involves 2 or 3 incisions – smaller than 1cm long – that allow a camera and instruments to enter the body. This is why keyhole surgery is very useful for performing organ biopsies and treating bladder disease. In large and giant breed dogs, we can also perform surgery to prevent GDV or stomach twisting.

Veterinary surgeons are making advancements in using laparoscopy for joint surgery all the time. These can greatly improve diagnosis and recovery time in a number of joint diseases.

Benefits of Keyhole Surgery for Pets

The major benefits of keyhole surgery for your pet include:

  • Less pain after surgery with a faster recovery time
  • Magnification to enable closer more accurate assessment of the operation site
  • Fewer complications due to smaller incisions.
  • Animals are usually back to normal activity the next day following routine procedures
